This set consists of 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch and 1 3/8 inch chisels packaged in a smooth brown leather tool roll. These chisels have Hollow ground backs and laminated steel blades. Oak handles with two steel ferrules.
In test after test, the Japanese chisels are shown to be capable of holding sharp edges longer than any of the Western chisels. (See Fine Woodworking, No. 51, Bill Stankus) The secret is the composite laminated steel used in the making of Japanese chisels. A soft steel body (low carbon) is joined to a harder steel (high carbon) cutting edge. The cutting edge of our chisels is hardened to HRC 63+-1, while the Western chisels typically are hardened to HRC 58. The softer steel body absorbs shocks when a mallet is used. Another unique feature is the hollow ground back (sole) which reduces the area in contact with the workpiece resulting in smoother cuts. The ÒhollowÓ also facilitates the process of achieving a 100% flat back during sharpening since only the outer edges of the hard steel need to be worked flat. The handle is made of Japanese red oak with a steel ring fitted to the top. Our chisels are made in Miki, Japan, which is the main center of quality steel production. The overall length is 9 inches.
